Contrary to what many of you may imagine, a career in letters is not without its drawbacks — chief among them the unpleasant fact that one is frequently called upon to sit down and write.

192. About Craft
You can get guidelines for fiction and nonfiction; you can be steered toward beautiful writing with the hope that you’ll be inspired and understand craft in a way that can’t always be articulated. But neither I nor any teacher has a neat chart for how to do this.
Craft has to do with rewriting, with honing the words down to story and emotion. Craft is about shifting your gaze from your own belly button to the world at large. It’s like being a carpenter; you cut and you sand and you polish. It’s about realizing that you will never, ever stop learning your craft.
